I have written my Manifesto and am rather happy with it. It reaches all the points I wanted to, is themed as I intended and I am really happy with the references I used.
“Computers are to design as microwaves are to cooking.”
I have heard it before but couldn’t think of what source I could reference, so I searched for it online.
I chose this quote because it raises an argument in the ‘New and Old Art‘ section of the manifesto. I didn’t want this to be a 1000 word rant so I took as many opportunities as I could to see the for and againsts for opinions (of me and the ones I referenced).
“The world is run on tricks. Everyone plays, but its having a true talent, a gift born within, something no degree can give you. You have such a talent…to talent and illusion.”
Christopher Waltz (actor), Francis Lawrence (director) Water for Elephants
This quote is from a film I saw recently, whilst I was stuck for what to write about infact. In a way this quote is what started the wheel turning on the substance of the manifesto. It got me thinking back to when I was on my gap year, looking for work in Graphic Design and wasn’t given a chance to prove myself because I had no qualifications. It frustrated me and this film reminded me of that.
“A splendid design can’t come out of others’ minds.”
I own a book called ‘Contemporary Graphic Design’, a reference book by Charlotte Fiell and Peter Fiell. It shows has work by a variety of artists preceded by a page with their name, information on them and their work and a quote they have said about their work. I had a scout around in this book for a quote that would work well in my manifesto and I don’t think this one could have worked any better if I had made it up myself!!
“Fate! It’s just the result of your reluctance & laziness towards your future. It is the only available occurring option in your life when you refuse to define your life… Nobody said life will be fair. Nobody promised, life will be easy. All you have to do is to make an effort.”
Benjamin Patrick, Blog, “Your Destiny is pre-arranged by God, but the confirmation & manifestation lies in your hands..!”
I actually found this quote when researching for my original, weaker, idea about paths in your life but I feel it works brilliantly for this one too. It acts as a piece of thread, sewing together all my points, prior to the conclusion. The ‘New and Old’ section and the ‘Qualifications’ piece all come together with this quote.
You can look at and anaylise other peoples work and like it or dislike it and you can look at other artists paths and agree or disagree, but ultimatley you are in control of your own life. If you want to achieve something, or get somewhere, apply yourself and don’t loose track of what you want.
