I took a break from the screen and had some time to actually chill (calm down) and came back to this problem with a fresh approach. I don’t want to just chuck the word back and choose another, I want to see this one through and come up with a design that is conceptually strong.
I started to look for different angles and looked up the definition of ‘Calm’. Words worth making a note of were:
- not excited
I began to think about about ways to resemble something calm in the actual word. In my survey idea I dragged the ‘L’ out, the reason I did this was because of the previous, initial thoughts, I mentioned “Weather> No Waves> Flat..”
I took this concept into my new design and put more focus on the “No Waves”.
I feel positive about the simplicity, yet directiveness of this design. There is a simple use of colour, obvious message, well balanced composition and a good use of research (in the people holding a drink and listening to music).
I think the sense of a quiet scenery and motionless people really say “Calm.”
I prefer the Left image (without the purple people), it feels more subtle.
