In our group of 3 I made another Facebook Group and posted this straight away:
This is how I’ve roughly broken down the 3 possible briefs:
>Lib: advertise the library outside (around the uni) and then make the library itself a more appealing place for students to improve their studies.
>Horizons 1: get horizons to appeal more (target audience 18-21)
Bar | advertise the drinks and promotions better
… floor | rearrange the area? looks better upon entry
Events | Advertise better
>Horizons 2: Design something to be placed near the bar & pool table to touch the hearts of students/staff.
I’m not really drawn to the first Horizons brief, how about you’s?
I like the broadness of the second Horizons one, the possiblities are endless.
What are we all thinking?
The rest of the group seemed to like the Horizons 2 brief so we wen’t for that one.
We didn’t really have a lot of time, not enough time to make a really organised effort. I would have liked to given every body jobs but with the 10 day deadline we just worked as one fast, efficient unit. So, we organised what we would do as far as the pitch went. Below is the skeleton of that. We also read through the brief, picking out key points and adding them to a brainstorm and spoke about what further research would need doing.
Initial ideas, without any research- we did this because we wanted to see what natural, uninfluenced ideas we could come up with.
We gathered our research using pretty much the same questionnaire as we did when we wrote the briefs ourselves (just changing a few details).
We then went home and looked for related inspiration. We found a news article about communities in offices and a blog title “21 ways to make someone’s day”. They both fuelled ideas.
Our ideas were now educated with what we were told by students and staff and from our inspirational web-research.
We came up with this beauty of an idea:
The idea behind it is to bring the people together and brighten up their day. There is 6 features to it:
- Drop of a Good Book: Suggest a book for people to read, brings everyone closer
- Charity Collection: The charity could be for Cancer or Africa or even towards something for the Uni.
- Joke Board: Pin up a good joke, make someone laugh.
- Ping Box: Put your number in and at some point, randomly, you will recieve a text, just saying “Hi”. Spontaneous happiness.
- Mirror above Charity Pot: Humourouse, would read “That Felt Good Didn’t It?”
- Birthday Billboard: A Picture of a person who has an upcoming birthday, make that one person feel special.
I think this idea ticks every box that is asked of us. It has enough features to reache all age groups, it would be decorative to improve the vibe and there would be a much greater sense of community with the Book idea and Birthday Billboard.
We had another 3 informed ideas too:
The thing first is actually the initial, uninformed, idea. We all agreed it was a good one so we want to take it further. The basic principle is that everyone, staff and students, all make a magnet and stick it to a giant magnetic CCCU logo. It would keep on growing for years and touch people all the while it does.
The bottom one that is a quick sketch of a very large and odd shaped sofa, it’s so large so it’ll be noticed and people will want to sit on it but the trick is that the surface is slippery and you slid into each other, bringing you closer together. Should make people laugh and happy.
The last one is based on the phrase “jump for joy”. Simple idea: £50 attached to a piece of string, jump to reach it. Should amuse people and make people just passing by look and smile, hopefully at the same time, reaching them emotionally too.
On thursday I will take images of Horizons, both for the presentation and to begin the Mock Ups.
