Above is Times Magazines First Edition and Latest edition.
It Shows (someone great for their times) Joseph Cannon, a politician. The latest issue has (someone also considered great for our time) Lionel Messi, one of the worlds #1 footballers.
Perhaps discuss what changed between March 1923 and Feb 2012 that lost politicians the honour they had and put sporting stars above them.
Problem with that is that I only have 2000 words to summaries and break up 89 years and a lot has happened since 1923!
Possible Solution could be to just pick out the covers where something drastic changed and then analyse the social, political, economical and environmental issues that happened slightly before.
Just found out that the cover shown above is not actually a official cover, its a sort of fan art. The actual cover is Preet Bharara, an American attorney (still a political figure)
This leads me to think about the peoples views of who should be respected and appreciated. Then to think about the magazines manifesto, see what their goal is and if it has any relation to “the people” perhaps they should take on board what “the people” think.
Another Slight Change
Time’s Twitter page tells me the Lionel Messi Cover is the international cover! However, I’m liking the idea of finding out what their manifesto states.
Brief History of ‘Time’
I couldn’t find a ‘manifesto’ as such so began to research them:
- First Weekly Magazine in America
- Created by Briton Hadden and Henry Luce
- Hadden: Time as something important but also fun, reflected in its tone, which people still say is too light for serious news?Suited to its heavy coverage of celebrities (including politicians)
- It set out to tell the news through people
That is Exactly what I wanted to read “tell the news through the people” this tells me a great deal about what their intentions were as a fresh, new magazine. They saw the public as a catalyst for their opinions and then used them as the outlet for them too.
They speak about the people, through the people.
In a sense, the humour Hadden was described to have brings politicians and celebrities and the public to the same level with their level-headed personal approach.
Concluding the Post
I’m now fairly certain of the route for this essay:
Look into the 4/5 significant moments in american/global history between 1923 and 2012 and then find the adjacent Times cover. Discuss its features, its style and it’s message. Making sure to keep in mind it’s intentions as a magazine and how/if they deviate or fall short..
