This is one project I really connected with. I had an image in my head, of how it would look, and I think it is almost spot on to what I imagined!
Below (Left) is my key influence in terms of style and (Right) my video.
I obviously had a few issues. Obtaining a soundtrack that built up in my 30 second window, was one major one. I sent out emails asking for permissions- got no replies.
Another was sound effects. I spent an entire day looking for sounds that fit well and annoyingly the sound is something always taken for granted, and the effort taken to get it right is never noticed.
Telling a Story
I was a little concerned in the narrative side of this piece so I considered a few different ways I could put the story across better.
The first idea I had was a literal narrative and for this type of piece Sir Ian McKellen felt right. I wrote a short script and sent it to an impressionist, asking if he wouldn’t mind recording it. Again, no reply.
So then I began to think a little differently and considered a Flicker Board, like you get at train stations, with a date on it. But as you can see below, the entire screen begins to get busy and there seemed to be no place for it.
What I Got Out It
I learnt a lot more this project than the last. Obviously last time I learnt After Effects, but this time I learnt things about After Effects that really improved the speed and effectiveness to what I worked at.
Pre Comping was one of the key things I learnt. I grouped different periods (Childhood, Teen, Adult) and elements (Streaks, Stars, Arrows) and other things to make it easier to find things. By the end there were so many Pre Comps and Pre Comps within Pre Comps within Pre Comp that it did get a little confusing but image looking at it without it! It would be finding something on a cluttered desktop, and I like my files really organised.
What I found really cool as well was making my animation in one Comp and then when I wanted to add titles and sound, putting it another (slightly longer) Comp. I feel like this was so much easier than it would be to extend all my layers backwards, keeping them in time.
The other thing this assignment has given me is, perhaps, a good ‘advert’ for myself. It shows my who I was, what I have changed into and my work.
